Risk of vitamin D deficiency 4 times higher in postmenopausal women living in northern latitudes

November 30th, 2010

Results from a study conducted in UK found that post-menopausal women living in the northern latitudes are four times more likely to be deprived of vitamin D than their southern counterparts.

Scientists compared the vitamin D levels of 518 postmenopausal women in Aberdeen (Scotland, UK) and Surrey (South of England, UK) and found that 40% of women had less than the minimum recommended amount of the vitamin in their bodies during the winter months. The women were asked to wear a badge with a film that detected the amount of UVB rays they were exposed to daily.

The research found that women in Scotland received half as much sun as their southern counterparts and were significantly more deprived of UVB rays.

These findings highlight the need to boost vitamin D levels in the winter months. Vitamin D supplementation is an easy and convenient way to optimize your vitamin D status.

Synergy Therapeutics Rx’s D10 provides Mother Nature’s intended daily dose of 10,000 IU of vitamin D3 in a once per day pulsed dose. Additionally, D10 is the only vitamin D supplement available over the counter that is physician & pharmacist formulated & approved.

Omega-3 fatty acid supplements to combat gum disease

November 27th, 2010

You may have read about the role of omega-3 in preventing heart disease, but did you know they can treat and prevent gum disease too?

Periodontitis, a type of gum disease that causes tooth loss, may be treated by taking omega-3 fatty acid supplements. A recent Egyptian study has unveiled the fact.

For this study eighty healthy subjects with advanced chronic periodontitis were enrolled. The control group was treated with scaling and root planing (SRP) and a placebo, whereas the omega-3 group was treated with SRP followed by dietary supplementation of fish oil (900 mg EPA + DHA) and 81 mg aspirin daily.

Statistical analyses demonstrated a significant reduction in the symptoms of gum disease in the omega-3 group in response to treatment at 3 and 6 months as compared to the control group at 6 months.

The results of this preliminary clinical study suggest that dietary supplementation with omega-3 PUFAs and 81 mg aspirin may provide a sustainable, low-cost intervention to augment periodontal therapy.

While you dental doctor can best decide if you are candidate for taking aspirin for your dental problem, you can certainly take EPACOR, omega-3 fish oil supplement from Synergy therapeutics to augment your oral health. The convenient softgel capsules contain the most desired formulation providing 1000 mg of EPA and DHA per serving.

Take EPACOR daily to help fortify your oral health.

Probiotics cut the duration of stomach infections

November 25th, 2010

Probiotics can cut short the duration of stomach disorders, found a review of 63 studies involving more than 8,000 adults and children with acute diarrhea.

The participants were given either a specific probiotic or a placebo on a random basis for 2 weeks. Factors like the effect of the probiotics on diarrhea, change in frequency or duration were taken into account by the researchers.

Taking a probiotic also reduced the risk of having diarrhea which generally lasted for more than 4 days and cut short the duration by over 1 day (24.76 hours). The difference was found to be noticeable from second day of illness with slightly fewer stools in the participants taking probiotics compared to the control group and gradually improving over the course of the illness.

The results remained unaffected even when factors like the type of organism causing infection, diarrhea severity, probiotic dose, strain or number of strains, study location or study quality were taken into consideration.

Probiotic supplements can provide an easy way to treat and prevent gastrointestinal infections by restoring the normal good bacteria population in your body. BiofloraPlusDDS-1from Synergy Therapeutics Rx contains 12 million CFU/g of Lactobacillus acidophilus along with B.longum, B.bifidum and B.lactis. Reduce menopausal depression with omega-3 fatty acids

November 24th, 2010

Depression is one of the common symptoms of the female menopause, necessitating several women to take antidepressants to suppress the fatigue, raise their spirits, and to decrease the overall emotional discomfort.

While the hormonal changes of menopause could not be undone, omega-3 fatty acids could help women cope with the symptoms of the menopause better, found a recent study from Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA.

The study involved 20 women who were given a placebo, followed by omega-3 fatty acid capsules (eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), 2 g/d) daily for eight weeks.

It was found that 70 per cent of the women saw a reduction of at least 50 per cent in their depression symptoms measured by MADRS (Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale) by the end of the trial.

According to experts from Massachusetts General Hospital, omega-3 fatty acid supplements can not only reduce hot flushes in women during the menopausal transition, but also help fight major depressive episodes.

If you are going through menopause you may find relief from fish oil.  Our omega-3 fish oil product Epacor is a concentrate of natural fish oil providing 1000mg of pure EPA and DHA per serving, with no filler “other” Omega-3 fatty acids. Prepared by molecularly Distillation techniques, it ensures elimination of trace elements, to ensure the best possible quality and purity. Try it!

Vitamin D deficiency poses higher death risk in diabetics

November 19th, 2010

I have already discussed in my previous articles the wide-ranging influence that vitamin D exerts over our health. There is substantial evidence that vitamin D deficient persons are  susceptible to diabetes mellitus. Now we have additional evidence suggesting that diabetics with severe vitamin D deficiency are at much higher risk of dying from all causes and cardiovascular disease compared with others.

For the study, the researchers followed 289 type 2 diabetes mellitus patients -172 having normoalbuminuria, 73 having microalbuminuria and 44 having macroabuminuria – for 15 years.

The average level of vitamin D was found to be a low of 35.7 nmol/L (14.3 ng/mL).

  • It was found that diabetics who had severe vitamin D deficiency were 103 percent more likely to die from all causes, compared with those having higher levels.
  • The researchers also found diabetes patients with severe vitamin D deficiency were 95 percent more likely to die from cardiovascular disease, compared with those having higher levels.

So, we have yet another reason to optimize our vitamin D levels. Synergy Therapeutic Rx D10 is an excellent vitamin D3 supplement which provides 10,000 IU of vitamin D3 simulating the natural pulsed dose. Try it!

Taking it regularly can help you improve your vitamin D levels!

Low vitamin D levels associated with pre-hypertension

November 18th, 2010

Various health studies world wide have shown that vitamin D has proven to increase bone health, improve symptoms of lupus and diabetes and assist with preventing certain types of cancers. It has also been found now that low serum vitamin D levels appear to be independently associated with the development of prehypertension.

Researchers conducted a cross-sectional study of 9,215 participants included in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) III who were free of hypertension at baseline. Participants were divided into quartiles based on serum vitamin D levels. The main outcome of interest was prehypertension (n=3,712), which was defined as systolic blood pressure of 120 mm Hg to 139 mm Hg or diastolic BP of 80 mm Hg to 89 mm Hg.

According to the results, low serum vitamin D levels were associated with the development of prehypertension, independent of risk factors such as age, sex, race, smoking, alcohol intake, BMI, physical inactivity, diabetes, HDL ratio, C-reactive protein and glomerular filtration rate.

When compared with the highest quartile of serum vitamin D (>32.4 ng/mL), the odds of developing prehypertension were increased in the lowest quartile (≤17.7 ng/mL; OR=1.48; 95% CI, 1.16-1.90).

The researchers concluded that future randomized trials are needed to determine if vitamin D supplementation during the prehypertension stage can prevent the onset of full-blown hypertension.

The study adds to the growing evidence that optimizing vitamin D levels are imperative for your overall health. For this, you can opt for a good vitamin d supplement. Our product Vitamin D10 provides 10,000 IU of natural vitamin D3 in a convenient once per day dose. Visit our products page to buy it.

Remember that an appropriate dosage of vitamin D now can also prevent heart problems in the future.

Vitamin D insufficiency: a risk factor for leukemia progression

November 15th, 2010

While vitamin D insufficiency is known to be associated with higher cancer incidence, a recent study found that Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) in patients with insufficient vitamin D levels progressed much faster and the patients were two times more likely to die than those with adequate vitamin D levels.

This study of 390 CLL patients found that 30 percent of them had insufficient vitamin D levels (less than 25 nanograms per milliliter) at the time of cancer diagnosis. After a median follow-up of three years, patients with insufficient vitamin D levels were 66 percent more likely to have disease progression and to require chemotherapy. They also had a two-fold increased risk of death, compared to those with adequate vitamin D levels. Similar findings were seen in a different group of CLL patients who were followed for 10 years.

The study indicates that vitamin D insufficiency may be a modifiable risk factor associated with prognosis in newly diagnosed CLL.

Optimizing your vitamin D status may help if you are living with cancer. Vitamin D supplements are an easy and convenient means to optimize vitamin D levels. Our product Vitamin D10 is the best supplement available over the counter that provides 10,000 IU of vitamin D3 in a once per day pulsed dose, similar to the natural pulsatile formation. Try it.

Vitamin D deficiency linked to obesity in children

November 9th, 2010

Vitamin D deficiency is known to cause a number of health conditions like hypertension, coronary heart disease and diabetes in addition to weight gain. According to the data from a recent study at University of Michigan, vitamin D deficiency may be a significant  contributing factor for obesity in children. Let’s take a closer look…

The investigators recruited a group of 479 school children aged 5-12 years from Bogota, Colombia, in 2006 and followed them for about 30 months. They measured vitamin D in blood at the beginning of the study, and then examined the link between vitamin D levels and changes in three indicators of body fat over time: body mass index, waist circumference and sub scapular-to-triceps skin fold ratio.

They found that the kids with the lowest vitamin D levels at the beginning tended to gain weight faster than the kids with higher levels. Moreover, vitamin D deficiency was also linked to slower growth in height among girls but not boys.

The findings clearly suggest that low vitamin D levels may put children at risk of obesity. It is also significant because vitamin D insufficiency is highly prevalent across the globe and childhood obesity rates are dramatically increasing worldwide.

If you are concerned about weight gain, you should keep a watch on your vitamin D level and take vitamin D supplements. Our product Vitamin D10 is the only vitamin D supplement available over the counter that is physician & pharmacist formulated & approved. It provides daily dose of 10,000 IU of vitamin D3 in a once per day pulsed dose. This may not only help you maintain your weight, but will also benefit your overall health and wellness.

Omega-3 fatty acid consumption halves metabolic syndrome in men

November 2nd, 2010

Frequent consumption of fish and omega-3 fatty acids is associated with a dramatically reduced risk for the metabolic syndrome among men, a South Korean population study has found.

The investigating team analyzed information on 3504 men and women aged 40-69 years from the prospective Korean Genome Epidemiology Study. At the beginning of study, all individuals were free of metabolic syndrome or any cardiovascular disease. Each participant completed a food frequency questionnaire. During 3 years of follow-up, there were 602 incident diagnoses of the metabolic syndrome.

The authors found that there was an inverse association between the frequency of fish consumption and the risk for developing the metabolic syndrome among men.

A similar inverse association was observed for average daily consumption of omega-3 fatty acids and risk for developing the metabolic syndrome. Men in the top decile of omega-3 consumption (median 786 mg/day) were half as likely to develop the syndrome as those in the bottom decile (median 37 mg/day).

The data from the study suggest a higher omega-3 intake could help the people with metabolic syndrome that are at a high risk to develop diabetes or cardiovascular disease or both later in their life. Supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids is a better option to achieve a higher omega-3 index without an increase in your calorie intake. EPACOR, our omega-3 supplement provides you the safest and most effective way to increase your omega-3 intake and reduce the risk of metabolic syndrome.
