Why do you need omega-3 fatty acids supplements?

December 29th, 2010

Most of you may be aware of the fact that omega-3 fatty acids are good for our heart and that they can be taken from fish. American heart association has also recommended that eating fish twice a week is good for a healthy heart. But the recommendation does not specify whether the fish should be baked, grilled or fried.

In a recent study related to omega-3 fish oils, the authors say that fried fish is actually not healthy for heart, as frying causes loss of beneficial fatty acids present in fish. Consumption of fried fish may be one of the potential reasons to cause stroke incidence and mortality.

The study results are based on a data of 21,675 people who had participated in a program called REGARDS (Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke). Of these individuals, 55 percent were from states with high stroke rates and the remainder lived in other states.

Investigators found that people living in the stroke belt were 30 percent more likely to eat two or more servings of fried fish than people living elsewhere in the country.

Research indicates that frying fish causes omega-3 fatty acids to be lost. Individuals in the stroke belt could regain those beneficial fatty acids by switching to other cooking methods of fish. These people may also consider trying omega-3 fatty acid supplements.

EPACOR, omega-3 fish oil capsules from synergy therapeutics provide 1000 mg of pure EPA and DHA in a convenient once per day dose. EPACOR provides all the benefits of omega-3 fish oil without adding extra calories to your diet.

Vitamin D supplementation reduces the risk of falling in older adults.

December 29th, 2010

Falling is one of the potential reasons of fatal and non-fatal injuries among seniors of 65 years and older and is also responsible for a significant amount of medical expenditure.

A recent evidence review by the U.S. Preventative services Task Force shows that vitamin D supplementation along with exercise is the most effective primary care intervention to prevent falls.

The study examined nearly 50 clinical trials which evaluated vitamin D supplementation, physical therapy and exercise to prevent falls in older adults. The results revealed that exercising or physical therapy can reduce the risk of falling in the elderly by 13% as compared to those who did not exercise. In addition, the individuals who took vitamin D supplements on a daily basis, the risk was reduced by 17% as compared to those who did not take vitamin D.

Therefore, besides doing regular exercise, vitamin D supplementation could prevent falls.

Consider taking Vitamin D10 from Synergy Therapeutics Rx that provides 10,000 IU of pure vitamin D3 in the natural pulsed form.

Take probiotics to reduce the risk of preterm delivery

December 22nd, 2010

Probiotics are better known for their benefits to improve gastrointestinal health. Now, they are also proven beneficial for the mother and the child. A recent study has revealed that women who reported habitual intake of probiotic dairy products were found to have a reduced risk for spontaneous preterm delivery.

This study was performed in the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort (950 cases and 17,938 controls) on the basis of answers to a food-frequency questionnaire to study any association between spontaneous preterm delivery (>37 gestational weeks) and intake of dairy products containing probiotic lactobacilli. The investigators found that women with the highest amounts of probiotic consumption were significantly less likely to experience spontaneous preterm delivery, compared with women reporting lower or no probiotic use.

These results imply that probiotics have the potential to improve pregnancy health or in other words, intake of probiotics can possibly reduce pregnancy complications. In order to achieve the reported benefits, consider adding probiotic dairy products/ supplements to your diet.

Be proactive and prevent Vitamin D deficiency

December 20th, 2010

The results of various studies have shown that vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency is prevalent across the world in all age groups.

Though vitamin D is easily available from the UV rays of sun, our modern lifestyle changes such as staying indoors, use of sunscreens and UV resistant glass have deprived us from the benefits we get from sun. Vitamin D deficiency causes bones to demineralise. The common manifestations of severe vitamin D deficiency may include:
•    Muscle aches
•    Symmetric low back pain
•    Proximal muscle weakness
•    Throbbing pain elicited with pressure over the sternum or tibia.

To replenish vitamin D levels in persons with vitamin D deficiency, vitamin D supplementation is a cost-effective regimen and recommended by experts world over. Vitamin D10, a high grade vitamin D supplement from Synergy Therapeutics provides Mother Nature’s intended daily dose of 10,000 IU of vitamin D3 in a once per day pulsed dose.

December 17th, 2010

Research on the benefits of taking probiotics has been on a continuous growth in the recent years. There is a growing body of evidence on the role of probiotics not only in gastrointestinal infections and irritable bowel syndrome, but also in the health and well being of mother and child. One such recent study which evaluated the safety and efficacy of probiotic supplements has revealed the surprising results.

The study concludes that probiotics are helpful in protecting pregnant women from gestational diabetes.
More than 250 pregnant women were included in the study from their first trimester of pregnancy and were followed for a period of two years. The subjects in the study group were given probiotic supplements and were also assigned to nutrition counseling.

The investigators found that the women who took probiotic supplements were less likely to develop gestational diabetes as compared to those who did not receive probiotic supplements. In addition, no adverse effect of probiotics was seen in either mothers or children.

The results of this study show that probiotic-supplementation during pregnancy is safe and cost-effective tool in addressing the metabolic epidemic.

Omega-3 fatty acids help prevent breast cancer

December 16th, 2010

Breast cancer is one of the common types of cancer in women.  According to National Cancer institute, every year more than 175,000 women are diagnosed and over 50,000 die of breast cancer in the United States. A number of studies are under way and many have already provided substantial evidence to determine the causes of breast cancer and its preventive measures. One such measure to lower the risk of breast cancer is to take enough omega-3 fatty acid supplements.

A new study has found that omega-3 fatty acids provide a preventative effect against breast cancer. The study results were represented at the 33rd Annual San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium held in San Antonio, Texas from Dec 8 through Dec 12.

In this study, the researchers tested omega-3 ethyl esters derived from  a fish oil capsule (containing 842 mg of EPA and DHA) in four lines of breast cancer cells representing four principal molecular subtypes of the malignancy, luminal A, luminal B, basal and HER2 overexpressors.

The researchers found the omega-3 ethyl esters suppressed NF-kB transcriptional activity, nuclear localization and overall function effectively in the cell lines of the luminal A, luminal B and basal subtypes except HER2 overexpressing subtype.

Although the jury is still out if omega-3 fatty acids can prevent only certain subtypes of breast cancer, the study has explained the preventative effect of omega-3 fatty acids against breast cancer.

Epacor, omega-3 fish oil supplement provides 1000 milligrams of pure omega-3 fish oil with 660 mg of EPA and 340 mg DHA. Try it, you may stay protected from breast cancer in future.

Protect your eyes from age-related macular degeneration with omega-3 fatty acids

December 8th, 2010

There is an ever growing body of scientific evidence that omega-3 fish oils help prevent a wide range of medical problems including cardiovascular diseases, depression and arthritis. There is substantial evidence supporting the role of omega-3 fatty acids in eye health. Now the researchers have found that omega-3 fatty acids also have a protective effect on age related macular degeneration (AMD), a common cause of blindness in seniors.

The observational study included 2520 subjects from Salisbury, Maryland aged 65 to 84 years who completed a diet habit questionnaire. The association between weekly fish intake of subjects and risk of AMD was investigated.

The results showed that advanced AMD was more likely to develop in subjects who consumed less fish than those with greater consumption of fish.

The study supports the protective effect of omega-3 fatty acids against advanced AMD.

If you are at risk for AMD, try omega-3 fatty acid supplements. Even if you are not a candidate for AMD you can improve your eye health by the use of fish oil supplements.

Epacor from synergy therapeutics is the best omega-3 supplement available over the counter which provides 1 g pure fish oil in one softgel with no fillers. Each enterically coated softgel consists 660 mg of EPA and 340 mg of DHA.

Northern American adults with metabolic syndrome found to be vitamin D insufficient

December 6th, 2010

Metabolic syndrome is a combination of medical disorders that may increase the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

The American Heart Association recommends that the metabolic syndrome be identified as the presence of three or more of these components:
•    Elevated waist circumference:  in men, equal to or greater than 40 inches (102 cm) and in women, equal to or greater than 35 inches (88 cm).
•    Elevated triglycerides:      Equal to or greater than 150 mg/dL
•    Reduced HDL (“good”) cholesterol:      In men, less than 40 mg/dL and in women, less than 50 mg/dL.
•    Elevated blood pressure:      Equal to or greater than 130/85 mm Hg
•   Elevated fasting glucose: Equal to or greater than 100 mg/dL

If you suffer from any three of these, you are at an increased risk of diabetes or cardiovascular disease.
According to a new study from the University of California, individuals with metabolic syndrome are more likely to have low levels of vitamin D.

Researchers examined plasma vitamin D concentration among adults with metabolic syndrome in Northern California but without diabetes or cardiovascular disease. Despite of the sunny climate in California, the results were surprising. Nearly 30 percent of participants had vitamin D levels less than 20 ng/ml.

Previous studies have linked high levels of vitamin D to a reduction in the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. This study clearly indicates that individuals with metabolic syndrome have a greater need to increase their vitamin D levels.

If you have any three of the symptoms of metabolic syndrome, you may have vitamin D insufficiency. Take vitamin D supplement D10 to increase your vitamin D levels; you may cut down your risk of diabetes.

Vitamin D deficiency linked to depression in young adults

December 2nd, 2010

People with insufficient vitamin D are at an 85 percent increased risk of depression compared with those who have sufficient levels.

Researchers from Georgia State University evaluated data from 7,970 individuals aged 15 to 39 in the United States. All the participants underwent an assessment of depression through use of the National Institute of Mental Health’s Diagnostic Interview Schedule.

The investigators found that subjects who had blood levels of vitamin D of 50 nmol/L or less had an 85 percent increased risk of experiencing current depressive symptoms when compared with subjects who had blood levels of at least 75 nmol/L.

Although previous research has indicated that a vitamin D deficiency is associated with a risk of depression, results of this new study add more support for this relationship.

Vitamin D supplementation can help you increase vitamin D levels. D10 is the only vitamin D3 supplement which provides 10,000 IU of vitamin D3 simulating the natural Vitamin D3 pulse.
