Reduce your dietary fat intake to prevent depression
Besides raising the risk of heart problems, eating foods high in trans-fats and other saturated fats may also increase the risk of depression, according to a new study.
For the study, the researchers evaluated 12,059 men and women, with an average age of 37. All were free of depression at the start of the study. After a follow-up of six years, 657 new cases of depression had been diagnosed.
Of all these cases, the participants with an elevated consumption of trans-fats presented up to a 48% increase in the risk of depression compared to participants who did not consume these fats.
On the other hand, the researchers also found that a higher intake of olive oil was associated with a lower risk of depression. Those with higher consumption of olive oil had a lower risk of depression as compared to those with lesser or no olive oil consumption.
So, watch your trans-fats intake, commonly found in foods like fast food, pastries, and whole milk. Both depression and heart diseases are influenced greatly by our diet.
Not all fats are created equal. There are fats like omega-3 fatty acids that are beneficial for your overall health. Adding omega-3 fatty acids to your diet has substantial health benefits ranging from fetal growth to cardiovascular health and also depression.
