Reduce your dietary fat intake to prevent depression

February 16th, 2011

Besides raising the risk of heart problems, eating foods high in trans-fats and other saturated fats may also increase the risk of depression, according to a new study.

For the study, the researchers evaluated 12,059 men and women, with an average age of 37. All were free of depression at the start of the study. After a follow-up of six years, 657 new cases of depression had been diagnosed.

Of all these cases, the participants with an elevated consumption of trans-fats presented up to a 48% increase in the risk of depression compared to participants who did not consume these fats.

On the other hand, the researchers also found that a higher intake of olive oil was associated with a lower risk of depression.  Those with higher consumption of olive oil had a lower risk of depression as compared to those with lesser or no olive oil consumption.

So, watch your trans-fats intake, commonly found in foods like fast food, pastries, and whole milk. Both depression and heart diseases are influenced greatly by our diet.

Not all fats are created equal. There are fats like omega-3 fatty acids that are beneficial for your overall health. Adding omega-3 fatty acids to your diet has substantial health benefits ranging from fetal growth to cardiovascular health and also depression.

Cut down your trans-fat intake and add omega-3 fatty acids to your diet and feel a better mental performance. Epacor, omega-3 fatty acid supplement provides one gram of pure fish oil in an easy-to-take, enterically-coated and molecularly distilled soft gels.

Vitamin D supplements may protect Obese from dying of flu

February 8th, 2011

A recent study, which will be published in the February issue of Clinical Infectious Diseases, shows that vitamin D may decrease the risk of dying from viral infections like H1N1 swine flu. The research suggested that vitamin D especially benefitted people in the high risk groups like obese.

The study evaluated 500 obese patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or more and showed that these patients were at three fold higher risk of dying from viruses, like the flu, than people with a healthy BMI.

Being obese makes you susceptible to a number of metabolic and infectious diseases. It is also known that obese people are deficient in vitamin D. Vitamin D, being fat-soluble, is absorbed into the fat tissue. Therefore, obese people are likely to have less vitamin D available in the blood.

Vitamin D is a powerful immune-modulator.  Alongwith being beneficial in the absorption of calcium for healthy bones, it is also important to the health of the immune system on a cellular level.

Taking vitamin D supplements may help obese people to optimize their vitamin D levels and increase their immunity. Vitamin D also known to complement weight loss measures like an exercise regime to allow you to shed that flab more effectively.

Vitamin D10 from Synergy Therapeutics Rx is the best available vitamin D supplement. It provides 10,000 IU of vitamin D3 in natural pulsed form. Try Vitamin D10 to optimize your vitamin D status. Click here to buy D10.

Yes, omega-3 fish oils help fight depression: finds the largest ever study

July 6th, 2010

Are you going through a stage of depression?  Do you feel lonely and sad? Don’t let depression ruin your life. Along with your anti-depressants, try fish oil supplements to make yourself happy. Yes, fish oil can really help depression. A recent Canadian study has shown the efficacy of omega-3 fatty acids or fish oil in reducing depressive symptoms.

In the study, 432 patients with Major Depressive Episode were recruited. For eight weeks, half of the participants took a fish oil supplement containing high concentrations of EPA and DHA. The other half took a placebo consisting of sunflower oil, flavored with a small quantity of fish oil. Initial analyses failed to clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of Omega-3 for all patients taking part in the study. Other analyses, however, revealed that Omega-3 improved depression symptoms in patients diagnosed with depression unaccompanied by an anxiety disorder.

Just like I wrote previously in “Omega-3 fatty acids for mental health”, this study adds more evidence to the fact that omega-3 fatty acids have an anti-depressant effect.  I am proud that our fish oil product “EPACOR” with its high concentration of EPA and DHA provides you the required dose of fish oil needed for effective treatment of depression.
