Thermal comfort of your cosy home may be contributing to Obesity.

February 21st, 2011

Are you gaining weight? Your warm home in winter may be contributing to your weight gain. Can’t believe, see for yourself…

According to a recently published review paper, more time spent in thermal comfort may promote obesity, by turning down the body’s own thermostat and its ability to effectively burn fat. According to the authors, reduced exposure to seasonal cold may have a dual effect on energy expenditure, both minimizing the need for physiological thermogenesis and reducing thermogenic capacity.

The authors have also discussed about the role of brown adipose tissue in human heat production. Brown fat differs from white fat in that it has the capacity to burn energy to create heat, and its development in the body is thought to be triggered by exposure to cold temperatures.

The rise in the prevalence of obesity needs greater concern. Studies have also found association between low vitamin D levels and obesity. Vitamin D supplements have the potential to fight obesity. Want to learn more about vitamin D and its association with obesity? Click here.

Vitamin D supplements may protect Obese from dying of flu

February 8th, 2011

A recent study, which will be published in the February issue of Clinical Infectious Diseases, shows that vitamin D may decrease the risk of dying from viral infections like H1N1 swine flu. The research suggested that vitamin D especially benefitted people in the high risk groups like obese.

The study evaluated 500 obese patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or more and showed that these patients were at three fold higher risk of dying from viruses, like the flu, than people with a healthy BMI.

Being obese makes you susceptible to a number of metabolic and infectious diseases. It is also known that obese people are deficient in vitamin D. Vitamin D, being fat-soluble, is absorbed into the fat tissue. Therefore, obese people are likely to have less vitamin D available in the blood.

Vitamin D is a powerful immune-modulator.  Alongwith being beneficial in the absorption of calcium for healthy bones, it is also important to the health of the immune system on a cellular level.

Taking vitamin D supplements may help obese people to optimize their vitamin D levels and increase their immunity. Vitamin D also known to complement weight loss measures like an exercise regime to allow you to shed that flab more effectively.

Vitamin D10 from Synergy Therapeutics Rx is the best available vitamin D supplement. It provides 10,000 IU of vitamin D3 in natural pulsed form. Try Vitamin D10 to optimize your vitamin D status. Click here to buy D10.

Are you obese? You could be vitamin deficient.

February 3rd, 2011

If you have gone through the article “Lose weight with vitamin D”, you may know that obesity is directly associated with vitamin D deficiency. Obese persons are more likely to be vitamin D deficient. Another study adds to the evidence.

A latest research conducted at the Rikshospitalet-Radiumhospitalet Medical Center in Oslo, Norway suggests that obese people have lesser circulating levels of vitamin D in the blood. The study that was recently published in the Journal of Nutrition, evaluated the body composition of 1779 patients with excess body weight. They measured the serum levels of vitamin D and 1,25(OH)2D of these patients.

The study found that various factors like age season and gender also influenced the serum 1,25(OH)2D levels. They noted that generally people with higher BMI had lower levels of vitamin D.

Keep a check on your weight. Being overweight and vitamin D deficiency have been found to be closely associated. If you are overweight, and trying to lose weight, vitamin D supplementation may help. Try vitamin D10, a vitamin D3 supplement from Synergy Therapeutics Rx that provide you the ideal 10,000 IU in the natural pulsed form.

Probiotics can help you reduce weight

August 11th, 2010

As discussed already in my previous articles, there is substantial evidence for the potential benefits of probiotics which include: improvement of immune system, management of lactose intolerance, prevention of H.pylori, yeast infections and colitis. Now, a recent study adds to the growing body of research which shows how probiotics can help you lose weight.

The study, carried out in Japan, recruited 87 overweight people with BMI of 24.2 to 30.7kg/m2, who were randomly assigned 200 grams of fermented milk, with or without probiotics, per day for 12 weeks. At the end of the study, significant decreases were observed in probiotics group in body weight, body mass index and waist circumference. Daily consumption of probiotics was associated with a 4.6% reduction in abdominal fat and a 3.3% reduction in subcutaneous fat. The control group showed no significant reductions.

The effect of probiotics in lowering abdominal adiposity also suggests their beneficial influence on metabolic disorders. Probiotics supplement “Bioflora Plus” from Synergy Therapeutics Rx provides 12 million viable good bacteria with probiotics to enhance probiotic performance.

Vitamin D deficiency: Risk of Metabolic Syndrome in Seniors

July 7th, 2010

I feel contented that one more study adds to the mounting evidence that older adults can easily overcome their vitamin D deficiency and hence the risk of developing metabolic syndrome. Go through the detailed articles on Diabetes and Obesity, highlighting available evidence that Vitamin D has the potential in the prevention and also in the treatment of these diseases. This new study also says much like that.

The study was presented recently at the 92nd annual meeting of The Endocrine Society, held recently in San Diego from June 19-22.  The researchers found that nearly 50% of the elderly subjects had Vitamin D deficiency and 37% had metabolic syndrome. The study consisted of a representative sample of the older Dutch population with nearly 1,300 white men and women aged 65 and older.

Subjects with blood levels of vitamin D lower than 50 nmol/l were more likely to have the metabolic syndrome than those whose vitamin D levels were more than 50 nmol/l. That increased risk especially stemmed from the presence of two risk factors for the metabolic syndrome: low HDL, or “good” cholesterol, and a large waistline.

Truly, there is enough evidence showing the benefits of Vitamin D. So, why don’t we get our vitamin D level tested and start taking Vitamin D supplements today? Think about it!
