Take probiotics to protect your teeth

February 24th, 2011

For decades, good bacteria or probiotics are being used in foods because of their beneficial effects for human health. The mechanism of action of probiotics is related to their ability to compete with pathogenic microorganisms in our body and to modulate our immune response. Probiotic supplements are being used successfully in gastro-intestinal disorders.

Probiotics are also beneficial for our oral health. Although only a few clinical studies have been conducted so far, the results to date suggest that probiotics could be useful in preventing and treating oral infections, including dental caries, periodontal disease and halitosis (unpleasant odors exhaled in breathing).

Studies have shown that probiotics have the potential to control dental caries in due to their inhibitory action against cariogenic streptococci. Evidence also exists on their role in periodontal disease or oral yeast infections.

Probiotics can help you reduce weight

August 11th, 2010

As discussed already in my previous articles, there is substantial evidence for the potential benefits of probiotics which include: improvement of immune system, management of lactose intolerance, prevention of H.pylori, yeast infections and colitis. Now, a recent study adds to the growing body of research which shows how probiotics can help you lose weight.

The study, carried out in Japan, recruited 87 overweight people with BMI of 24.2 to 30.7kg/m2, who were randomly assigned 200 grams of fermented milk, with or without probiotics, per day for 12 weeks. At the end of the study, significant decreases were observed in probiotics group in body weight, body mass index and waist circumference. Daily consumption of probiotics was associated with a 4.6% reduction in abdominal fat and a 3.3% reduction in subcutaneous fat. The control group showed no significant reductions.

The effect of probiotics in lowering abdominal adiposity also suggests their beneficial influence on metabolic disorders. Probiotics supplement “Bioflora Plus” from Synergy Therapeutics Rx provides 12 million viable good bacteria with probiotics to enhance probiotic performance.
