Auto-immune disorders may induce miscarriages

Autoimmune diseases are a group of chronic illnesses which are characterized by the body’s immune system attacking its own organs. The study determined that maternal autoimmunity itself can increase the risk of genetic abnormalities in embryos. Study authors are encouraging doctors to test women who experience recurrent pregnancy losses for autoimmune diseases as a way to better prevent miscarriages.

Vitamin D deficiency can affect thyroid function

An under active thyroid, also called hypothyroidism, may result in weight gain, fatigue, extreme cold, and increased menstrual periods in women. When the thyroid gland’s activity increases beyond normal, a condition called hyperthyroidism develops. Symptoms include pounding heartbeat, extreme anxiety, rapid weight loss and raised temperature.

While several factors may result in either condition, the most common causes are autoimmune diseases called Graves’s disease or autoimmune hyperthyroidism and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis or autoimmune hypothyroidism (AITDs).

An autoimmune disease is a disease in which the body’s immune system, which normally protects against invaders such as viruses and bacteria, becomes confused and attacks healthy tissue. In this case, the immune system attacks the thyroid gland, causing it to malfunction.

Vitamin D has been linked to various autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, asthma and multiple sclerosis. Recent studies have also linked it to autoimmune thyroid diseases.

Recently, a study was undertaken to evaluate the levels of vitamin D in patients with AITDs compared to patients with non-AITDs and healthy controls. Serum vitamin D (25-OH) levels were measured in 50 patients with AITDs, 42 patients with non-AITDs and 98 healthy subjects. Vitamin D deficiency was designated at levels lower than 10 ng/ml.

Results showed that vitamin D deficiency was significantly higher in patients with AITDs compared with healthy individuals (72% versus 30.6%), as well as in patients with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis compared to patients with non-AITDs (79% versus 52%). Vitamin D deficiency also correlated to the presence of antithyroid antibodies and abnormal thyroid function tests.

The study suggests the involvement of vitamin D in the pathogenesis of AITDs and advises vitamin D supplementation.

A recent study, which will be published in the February issue of Clinical Infectious Diseases, shows that vitamin D may decrease the risk of dying from viral infections like H1N1 swine flu. The research suggested that vitamin D especially benefitted people in the high risk groups like obese.

The study evaluated 500 obese patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or more and showed that these patients were at three fold higher risk of dying from viruses, like the flu, than people with a healthy BMI.

Exercises and Vitamin D supplements may benefit prostate cancer patients

A latest research published in the Jan issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology suggests that patients of prostate cancer should involve themselves in routine exercise schedule.

Prostate Cancer is the most common cancer among American men. 80% of the patients have a localised disease, and the 10-year survival rate post-diagnosis is upwards of 93 percent.

The study showed that three hours a week or more of vigorous exercise improved the prognosis and overall health among such patients, lowering their risk of dying from the disease. The research added that even moderate physical activity of about 15 minutes per day appears to lower the overall risk of dying.

In the study, the researchers analyzed the physical exercise routine of 2705 patients, who were diagnosed with prostate cancer after 1990, every 2 yrs for 18 years.  Their physical activities like walking, jogging, running, bicycling, swimming, rowing, stair-climbing, playing tennis, squash, racquetball, golf, weight-lifting and arduous outdoor work were given a ranking called “metabolic equivalent task” or MET value based on the amount of energy each required relative to being sedentary.

During the research, 548 patients died, 20% of which were the result of the disease.

There was nearly 50% decrease in the death risk due to any cause and a 61% in dying specifically from the disease who engaged in three hours a week or more of vigorous exercise than those for less than one hour per week.

Men who registered 5 to 10 hours a week of non-vigorous activity had a 28% lower risk for all-cause mortality compared with men who engaged in less than 1 hour per week of similar exercise. And that relative risk decreased to 51% among men with more than 10 hours per week of similar types of exercise.

A new research published in the January issue of Arthritis and Rheumatism has shown that greater physical activity is likely to help people suffering from knee osteoarthritis walk faster than those with lower physical activity.

The research included 2,589 Participants suffering from knee osteoarthritis. There ability to walk was assessed for 2 years.  During the study, the participants were asked to fill out self-reported questionnaires about their physical activity and were divided into four physical activity groups, from lowest to highest, using a general activity score.

In the lowest physical activity group, only 49% participants were able to walk fast enough to cross the street before the light changed, whereas in the next three higher physical activity groups, this percentage was 63%, 71% and 81% respectively.

Vitamin D deficiency in patients with interstitial lung disease associated to reduced lung function

You may know from my previous articles at www.strxonline.com , that vitamin D is a powerful immune modulator.  Vitamin D deficiency has been implicated in the development of certain autoimmune diseases such as asthma, rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease. Now, a recent U.S. study has found that vitamin D deficiency is also related to the development and severity of interstitial lung disease (ILD).

Researchers at the University of Cincinnati analyzed serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels in 118 ILD patients. Among study participants, 67 had connective tissue disease (CTD-ILD) and 51 patients had other forms of ILD. The overall prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency in the study population was 38% and 59%, respectively.

The researchers found that patients who had connective tissue disease-related ILD were more likely to have vitamin D deficiency (52% vs. 20%) and insufficiency (79% vs. 31%), compared with patients who had other forms of the disease.

Among patients with low vitamin-D levels and connective tissue disease-related ILD the researchers noted reduced lung function, including diminished forced vital capacity. These associations persisted even after adjusting for potential confounding factors.

The study concluded that there is a high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in patients with ILD, particularly those with CTD-ILD, and it is associated with reduced lung function.

Vitamin D deficiency poses higher death risk in diabetics

I have already discussed in my previous articles the wide-ranging influence that vitamin D exerts over our health. There is substantial evidence that vitamin D deficient persons are  susceptible to diabetes mellitus. Now we have additional evidence suggesting that diabetics with severe vitamin D deficiency are at much higher risk of dying from all causes and cardiovascular disease compared with others.

For the study, the researchers followed 289 type 2 diabetes mellitus patients -172 having normoalbuminuria, 73 having microalbuminuria and 44 having macroabuminuria – for 15 years.

The average level of vitamin D was found to be a low of 35.7 nmol/L (14.3 ng/mL).

  • It was found that diabetics who had severe vitamin D deficiency were 103 percent more likely to die from all causes, compared with those having higher levels.
  • The researchers also found diabetes patients with severe vitamin D deficiency were 95 percent more likely to die from cardiovascular disease, compared with those having higher levels.
